Nightshade Kitchen presents:

The Western Den

To find a musical soulmate, someone with whom to explore your innermost feelings, unite artistic languages, and craft a shared voice is a daunting, even mysterious, undertaking. Some writers spend years searching and never uncover the other half they seek; for others, a partnership just flicks on like a light. The origin story of the hauntingly beautiful duo The Western Den is wonderfully curious in just this way: Deni Hlavinka, an introspective pianist from small town Virginia, posted a song idea on a college forum for accepted students. Chris West, a bright-eyed guitarist from Bermuda, sent back the song the following day in finished form. Upon meeting in person, they discovered their musical—and personal—bond was eerily close; there was never a discussion of forming a band, never a conscious choice, it just happened, fueled by a sheer desire, a necessity to pursue what felt right.

Olivia Barton

Olivia Barton is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter who sings about things she never intended to tell strangers. At the foundation of her musicality is her unyielding truth-seeking nature— her songs expressing exquisite hopefulness, vulnerability, and the desire to authentically connect with herself and others. Having grown up listening to Laurel Canyon singers and 70’s dad rock, she is now inspired by and compared to indie/rock contemporaries such as Phoebe Bridgers, Andy Shauf, and Pinegrove.

Barton’s debut record I Could Have Smiled At You More was released in June 2019. The intentionally demo-like sonic quality of the album, coupled with the conversational nature of her lyrics, result in a hauntingly beautiful window into a young woman’s most intimate confessions. It is “a combination of darkness and light that is heartbreaking, but honest and genuine at its core.” (Sally Pigeon, Sound of Boston: Premiere)

Bear's Tapestry

Bear's Tapestry combines the vulnerable, honest lyricism of folk, with the roller-coaster transitions of contemporary indie rock and nuanced rhythms of jazz.

Laden with emotion, songwriter Bear Borges challenges listeners to a deeper understanding.

With the Nightshade Chefs serving an original food menu exploring Mizrahi Jewish cuisine of Northeast Africa and the Middle East. Full menu to be announced!

We present this event with the belief that a piece of music is enriched when accompanied by a fine meal, that food is similarly enriched when accompanied by a song. The chefs spoon is stirred with the same care and calculation with which the fingers strum a chord, by which the hand pats the back. Finally, this event is made possible and affordable through resources gathered from our community, the voluntary hard work and support of ordinary people and the respect of all guests.
